Description
26 July 1992. O ye who believe! it is not lawful for you to inherit from women against their will; nor should you detain them wrongfully that you may partake of what you have given them, except that they be guilty of a clearly outrageous flagrancy; do consort with them in kindness; and if you dislike them it may be that you dislike something wherein Allah has put much good. Further commentary upon Sura' al-Nisa verse number 20: It is extremely important that the Community revise their Jurisprudence so that the shot-comings with regards to inheritance can be rectified. * Further clarification of the disinheriting of lewd women. * Elaboration of the meanings of the words آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ ['what you have given them']. * The rights of the beneficiaries of the deceased in relation to the widow. * Those addressed in this verse: Issues pertaining to the treatment of women and children have been grossly misunderstood by most people, and they have consequently deviated from the straight path. It is written in 'The Holy Quran' ۚعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ['do consort with them in kindness;'] the current practice, however, is against this injunction. In this respect there are 2 categories of people. There are those who have given women free reign to do whatever they want. Such women pay no heed to religion and conduct themselves in an unIslamic manner, and there is no one to question them. On the other extreme there are those who albeit do not give free licence, treat women with such severity and harshness that it is hard to distinguish their women from animals. They are treated worse than slaves and beasts. They beat them so mercilessly as if they were lifeless objects. They are treated so cruelly, that it has a become a proverb in the Punjab that a woman is like a pair of shoes which may be thrown away and replaced at will. Such attitude is extremely dangerous and contrary to Islam. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the perfect example for us in every aspect of life. Study his life and see how he conducted himself in relation to women. In my esteem, a man who stands up against a woman is a coward and not a man. If you study the life of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) you will find that he was so gracious that, despite his station of dignity, he would stop even for an old woman and would not move on until she permitted him to do so...... Sometimes the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would even race with Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) on one such occasion he won the race and at another time he slackened on purpose to let Aisha run ahead of him. So that he won the race. Another such example is when a troupe of negroes came to perform and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed their performance to Aisha and when Umar (Allah be pleased with him) arrived those negroes saw him and ran off. (Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. November 1901. 'Malfuzat' ['Discourses'] ii: 387, 388). * Advice to the Community to publish such statements from the Promised Messiah from time to time. 17 February 1996. © The Tahir Archive, 2013.
